I still remember first time back in 2015 when I came to Korea and I was out in the city on 11th of November and couldn't understand why there are so many convenience stores and cake shops selling so much pepero sticks or pocky for Japanese version.
I could actually realized later that day when I received a Pepero Day present from my boyfriend I was dating back then that in Korea there is a special event this day.
Pepero day is celebrated every year on 11th of November. The choice of the day is obvious (11.11). The correlation between the shape of peperos (sticks covered with different types of chocolates) and the shape of the date. As Koreans like celebrating different days for special specific events, Pepero Day is one of them. Pepero day usually is celebrated by couples, but not only. It can also be celebrated with friends or co-workers by sharing pepero boxes to each other.
What type of Peperos are out there?
Convenience store or mart peperos boxes
Convenience stores and market are making special arrangements and they are preparing special gift packages for selling.
You may see a large varienty of different pepero flavoured boxes from Chocolate to even orange and melon flavor. Usually a box of pepero is 1,500 won (aprox. 1$)
Handmade pepero
Most of cake shops, coffee shops and macarons shops are selling special handmade pepero baked during the same day. The price may vary way more from the original pepero box price, a box with special pepero sticks even can reach 40,000 (aprox 35$).
Pepero kit for homemade
Some shops are selling special kits for homemade pepero. Shops like Daiso or craft shop are selling different pepero kit from which you can actually choose your own flavors and decorations for your peperos.
