Updated: Aug 18, 2022

Soedaemun prison is one of the monuments that are related with the Independence Movement from Japanese occupation where the independence movement activists were imprison behind the wall of this building.

Establishment

The prison was officially established in 1908 under the name Gyeongseong Prison. The name changed into Seodaemun Prison in 1912 when the prison building got extended due to large number of activists that were imprison by that time.

A monument to be remembered

In 1992 the place was transformed into Seodaemun Independence Park to commerate the Korean patriots who sacrificed their lives for country's freedom.

The entrace of the park is market by the Independence Gate which was built in 1897 following the first Sino-Japanese War.

The visitors of the Prison can visit a couple of exhibition exhibition rooms starting from the Prison History Room, to Theater where video projections are shared to visitors, the National Resistance Room as well as the underground torture room were visitors can see real torture machines and torture scene as well as the process of interrogation.

For me, the most impressive part was the prison's hallway. You can still feel a strange atmosphere whil walking down the hallway while the sunlight is making its path inside.

The outdoor also has a couple artifacts exhibited and a garden.

Yu Gwan-sun & March First Independence Movement

One of important figure of the Independence movement, Yu Gwan-sun, also was imprison at Sodaemun Prison in 1919 where she was torture and interogated, but she refused to speak out and she fought till the end to protect her country and its freedom. She died in 1920 due to injuries from the torture but she remains in Korean history as a symbol of Korea's Indepence as she was the organizer of the what is known under the name "March First Independence Movement" also known as Sam-Il (3-1) which is also related to the Man-se Demonstrations
