Korean Back Scratcher(효자손) Inscribed with Hangeul experienceat Seoul Upcycling Plaza (서울생활용플라자)

Updated: Sep 14, 2021

Hello,

In this blog I will present my special workshop experience at Seoul Upcycling Plaza (SUP) located nearby Janghanpyeong station.

The center offers a few different workshops for both Koreans and foreigners and all the workshops products are recycling products and materials.

First to talk about my experience, we should clarify what is upcycling exactly.

According to the official site of the plaza, upcycling is:

"An act of finding new value in objects that are discarded by adding designs and discovering new purpose. Upcycling is a new paradigm of recycling resource in order for environmental preservation; carefully considering from the moment objects are made until objects loses it purpose, to extend valuable usage of objects while taking into account of the environment and nature."

As you could see, they created different pieces of art which were really pretty.

The center also has an Academy, a Flea Market and it also held a few annual festivals.

The workshop we participate was located at 4th floor of this plaza center. As our reservation was made at 2PM, we arrived there a few minutes before the workshop so when we arrived we started directly the experience. The lady who showed us how to inscribe in the hood different drawing and Hangeul writing was really kind and nice with us.

What is "효자손" (Hyo-Ja-Son) means in Korea?

From 효자 ("dutiful son, filial child") + 손 ("hand"), literally "dutiful son's hand".

A necessity Korean old people as this tool is made to reach the back where hand can't reach.

As you can see we not only inscribed the back scratcher but also we received a glass holder as well that we also draw by ourselves. Mine looks quite ugly as I was not getting used with the intensity of the wood inscribing pen.

The experience last around 2 hours, first we practice a bit how to use the wood pen, after we chose what to draw on the glass holder and in the end we chose a phrase (methaphor) to inscribe on the back scratcher and some extra drawings.

As I love French Bulldogs, I also add a small Frenchie on my stick.

We took some photos of our scratcher at the first floor of the plaza with one piece of art made by recycled bottles.

And after we walked a bit around the place and explored it.
