November 9th, Firefighting Day

Did you know in Korea each year on November 9th it's celebrated the Firefighting Day?

This day is established to protect the property and life of the people from fire by raising awareness and understanding of fire and preventing fire in advance.

The history of Firefighting in Korea

The action of preventing, alerting, and suppressing a fire is called fire fighting. The history of fire fighting began in ancient times, and in the Joseon Dynasty, it is specified as a gold coin.

During the 8th year of King Sejong's reign (1426), a Geumhwa Docham was installed under Byeongjo, so this is the first firefighter ever establishment.

With the establishment of the government in 1948, the government set a period of emphasis on fire care and held commemorative events such as commendations for merit and fire care campaigns during November 1.

Why 9th of November?

Since 1963, the Firefighting Day event was organized by the Ministry of the Interior, and in 1991, the Firefighting Act was revised, and November 9, symbolizing 119 was established as Fire Fighting Day. Article 14 of the current Fire Fighting Act stipulates the enactment and operation of Fire Fighting Day, saying, "The city road can set November 9th as Fire Fighting Day every year to hold a commemorative event on fire safety."

Celebration

From 1999, nationwide events began to be held under the supervision of the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs. In 1999, a commemorative event was held at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts with the president and his wife attending, and in 2000, the event was held at the 88 Olympic Weightlifting Stadium under the presence of the president. In 2003, on the occasion of the 41st anniversary of Firefighting Day, a central unit commemorative event was held to encourage fire officials who strive to protect the lives and property of the people and to provide opportunities to increase the pride and reward of safety workers, including firefighting. In 2004, the Fire and Disaster Prevention Agency under the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs was established, and in 2005, a ceremony was held at the Sejong Cultural Center under the supervision of the Fire and Disaster Prevention Agency.

This year the 60th anniversary of Firefighting Day was celebrated!
