A trip back in time with "Dongju: The portrait of a poet"

In this post I want to introduce to you one of the Korean movies which impressed me a lot.

As a big fan of the main actor, Kang Haneul, first time when the movie was released, I was waiting excited for the movie to release its English subtitles. Even though I know Korean, as the movie plot takes part back during the colonial period of Korea, a lot of dialects and also Japanese language is used in the movie so it would have been difficult for me to understand.

Before I start my review of the movie, I would like to take a bit to first talk about the main character of the movie, Yun Dong-ju.

Who was Yun Dong-ju?

Yun Dong-ju was a Korean poet who lived during the Japanese occupation in Korea. While studying in Japan, he was imprisoned for his alleged involvement in the anti-Japanese movement in 1943.

In my opinion, Yun Dong-ju is an important character in Korean history as well as for Korean language for both his lyric poetry as well as for his resistance poetry.

He participate and support the Korean Independence movement to release Korea from the Japanese governance through his poetry, and used Korean language to express his origins and support for his country.

His famous poetry collection “Sky, Wind, Star, and Peom” (하늘과 바람과 별과 시) was published after his death and through his writing he became “the most popular poet amongst the youth” and came into spotlight as a Resistance poet of the late occupation period.

Going back to the movie, Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet (동주) is a 2016 South Koreanblack-and-white biographical film directed by Lee Joon-ik about the Korean poet Yun Dong-ju starring Kang Haneul as main character and Park Jeong-min as Song Mong-kyu.

It depicts the life and the death of the poet in the setting of the Japanese colonial era. The mood and nostalgia of that period is given not only by the plot but also due to black-and-white screen.

Mixed at the begging with a bit of humor and sympathy through the friendship of Dong-ju and his cousin and friend Song Mong-gyu, wile the story goes on, the viewers can see the hardships Korean went through the colonial period of Japan and also the life of Korean intellects who studies in Japan during that period as well as some important historical moments. that contribute at Korean Independence Movement.

In my view, this is an emotional movie which brings your through different emotions form sympathy, nostalgia to sadness. Is a movie which is a must-watched for those who are interested in Korean culture and history as it depicts a lot of important moments from Korean history which led it to the country is now.
